Captain America: The First Avenger

We all laughed, but the first thing that was said when the lights came up was “DC, get your shit together!”  And that really sums up Captain America in a way.  It’s another good but not flat out great comic book film that segways perfectly into the upcoming Avengers movie.  Marvel had a plan, they stuck to it, and it’s paying/paid off very well.  I actually liked The Incredible Hulk and most people feel that’s the weak link of the solo films they’ve put out for the characters.

Quick synopsis if this is all foreign to you (as it was for the most part to me): the setting is World War II era New York, a scrawny kid from Brooklyn wants to join the Army and go into battle but he keeps getting rejected.  He has the heart but not the body of a soldier.  Thanks to a ‘secret serum’ he volunteers for, he gets the body and voila (SPOILER ALERT) he becomes Captain America.  Kudos to Marvel for not trying to stick us with two fish out of water heroes in one summer (since we already got Thor).

The tone of Captain America is light; not an ironic ‘superheroes are stupid, kind of way, but a good clean American fun way.  I know little about the character but I appreciated the few in-jokes I was able to recognize (like how the creation of the actual comic book character mirrored what was going on in the world at the time).  And Hugo Weaving is probably the nicest guy on earth, but he was truly born to play these over the top comic book villains.  Red Skull was fairly one dimensional but he still kept me interested throughout.

No one got up after the end credits since Marvel has trained us to wait for the scene after the credits.  In my opinion the one after this film was the best so far (and the one fanboys have been waiting for).

Til next time…
