Al Green_7

First song of the week.

The Shuffle took me back to an underrated Al Green song (just saying that seems a little false).

Anyway, my ‘gospel’ collection isn’t terribly deep obviously, but (as I try to emulate in my own way), I dig stories that can reference spirituality without being on the nose about it every time you bring it up.

My Frat ‘DJ Joe Brooks’ sent me his Valentine’s Day mix last night.  It’s a nice blend of old school, blue eyed soul and reggae.  Good music choice to start this week.

Let’s go Classic Soul today.

Akela pointed me toward a ‘studio’ version of this song where the Reverend is singing along with Journey accompanying him as the in house band.  It’s an incredible ‘this moment in time’ piece.

I couldn’t re-locate that one at the moment, but even on the version you know, you can pretty much hear the needle sliding across the vinyl as you stay off the couch with the plastic covering it.

‘Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around.’

I’m in the middle of one of those nice ‘one step forward, two steps back’ phases.  I’m kind of, strangely blissful about it all though.

I’d like to believe I’m past the point of being naive about anything.  I really shouldn’t be, but when things started to quickly go south over the weekend, I was/have been reminded of how ‘connected’ I am and try to be to the world around me.  Not connected in the political sense; actually I mean this in the opposite way.  That golden rule.  Treat people well.  Support them. Encourage them.  Smile.  Make them laugh.  When it feels right, give, with no expectation that your generosity will be or has to be reciprocated.  It doesn’t always come back to you when you want it, but it seems to find its way back to you when you really need it.

At least it did and it is for me right now.

I had ‘Love Actually’ on in the background today (see above quote), but I feel like I’ve posted all those songs ad nauseum (though I was delighted to see Sir Paul say that ‘God Only Knows’ almost always brings him to tears as a perfect song.)

So instead, how about can I talk you into starting this week with some Rev. Al?

Get the week started right!
