Caught the trailer for the new Elton John biopic.  I don’t know.  I’m still a little more interested in the Freddie Mercury biopic, but that’s just me.

Anyway, the Elton trailer did put me in the mood for one of my favorite (sad) love songs.  So lyrical.

Enjoy!

Keeping with the Blues theme…

Definitely my favorite song by Elton.  Always heard he thought of it as a ‘Ray Charles song’.  Was way too young to know this when I first fell in love with it, but evidently that’s Stevie playing harmonica in the middle section (as if I needed more reason to feel this song.)

Enjoy!

Oh come on, did we really need another cover of ‘God Only Knows’?  You can’t really top the original.

Fine I’ll check it out…

(clicks Play…)

Oh, an orchestra?  OK…

Elton?  Stevie?!?

(nostrils flaring up…)

Chris Martin?!?  Kylie?!?  Dave Grohl?!?

(lip quivering…)

LORDE?!?  ONE DIRECTION?!?

(‘God Only Knows What I’d Be Without You…’)

AND BRIAN WILSON GETS THE LAST VERSE?!?

OK, you guys win that one.  That was certainly an above average cover.

(hitting ‘Post’ and walking away from the computer as the big tears roll down my cheeks…)

Still writing about heartbreak.  I always loved how he said this was his attempt at doing a ‘Ray Charles song.’  Not bad at all right?

Have a good weekend.

As far as the Globes go, it reflected my own feelings and the general vibe among all the film geeks I talk to:  there’s been a lot of good films and performances this year, but no universal ‘This one is so far above everything else’ (keeping in mind this is all subjective in the first place).  I won’t write it about here until next Sunday night at the earliest, but I’ll be interested when the Academy nominations come out Thursday morning.  Are there favorites now? Sure.  Locks?  Won’t go that far…

Anyway, for you music lovers let’s go back into that mode for the next few days.  I know retrospect is everything, but when I watch this video, I want to go to people who were adults in the 80s and ask ‘Really?  You guys had no idea?’

Start the week off right:

My outline is in place, have my three major female characters set up (I think):

1. The ex-wife who you married because of the electric physical chemistry.  But once that were off, you realized she was kind of an asshole…

2. The great love who you’re still on good terms with all things considered.  Maybe it was the wrong time?

3. And the main character who doesn’t seem like an obvious option but may in fact be perfect for you.  But is she?  To be continued.

To all my friends who offered suggestions for actresses/comediennes, thank you, thank you, thank you.  I took all your suggestions and filled out my prototypes with these women in mind.  So much talent out here, man.  Very happy with my prototypes, and I’m in love with writing again, honeymoon phase or not.

Anyway, since I’m in my full Sinatra ‘heartbroken but optimistic romantic’ mode, I thought I’d throw up one of my all time favorites today.  Great song, even the lyrics alone I love.  Enjoy.

Don’t wish it away
Don’t look at it like it’s forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I’m away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won’t be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I’m your man

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself
